THIS IS D LY P
Don’t try and pronounce it - it’s not a word - it’s just letters - but it’s beautiful…
After 15 years of Deadly Ponies, an all new experimentation space for sculptural product design has been born. Welcome DLYP Studios, a duplicitously elegant and playful leather accessories collection. With a nod of joy and yet still gracefully functional, these beautiful pieces are both clever in design and considerate to their companion. A modern use of materials and colours embolden the aesthetic; python and patent leathers in striking hues sit alongside natural, soft-grain hide.
The collection is now available at Selfridges (UK), Bergdorf Goodman (NY), Beams Japan, Boutique 1 (UAE), David Jones (AU), online at Shopbop and at dlypstudios.com. The collection is also available at Deadly Ponies stores.
With the challenge of such ambitious and innovative product we asked designers Liam Bowden and Steven Boyd our burning questions.
What is your design philosophy?
LB: With every D LY P piece our architectural vision is injected with a twist that demands a head turn. Sculpturality is at the heart of every creation; not somber or restrained but always considered beyond the expected.
What was your inspiration for the collection?
SB: Our inaugural collection was borne from a place by the ocean. Time spent reaching for creative inspiration from elements around us on an empty, windswept beach. Oyster shells peeking from the sand, umbrella’s fighting in the breeze, picnic hampers bundled with joy. This collection is a few of our favourite things from our favourite place.
What are you inspired by right now?
LB: We are always looking to art and architecture as something that we love so naturally this becomes a source of our inspiration. The Fiberthin Village project by Frank Lloyd Wright is our current inspiration. Featuring a series of hemispherical homes and split spheres made from Fiberthin, a vinyl-coated nylon fabric. We love the curved shapes and bold materials used.
SB: The Feltri Armchair by Gaetano Pesce is another piece that we love. It’s padded, fluffy texture combined with the oversized blanket stitching and bold amazing colours is something that I am sure will be reflected in a future DLYP story. So beautiful and bold but yet so functional.
