A year in the making, we are elated to present Deadly Ponies x Anni Albers; a collection designed in association with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
Anni Albers brought wonder to weaving, and now Deadly Ponies brings those works to life in our Winter ’20 collection - celebrating the most innovative and influential textile artist of the 20th century. As a key member of the Bauhaus movement, Anni Albers was a female pioneer in the textile world, blurring the lines between art and craft.
Anni Albers believed in slowness, looking to the past to solutions as mass production ramped up during the twentieth century. Characterising her work, slowness and experimentation are woven throughout her pieces - a concept we adhere to at Deadly Ponies, using creativity and innovation at every stage of our process.
The collection includes a series of pieces each depicting designs inspired by "Red Meander". Using a technique of screen printing onto American small-grain calf, the Meander piece has been carefully replicated to ensure a true translation of the print. Each colour on the print is individually lined up and silk-screened to create the pattern; a detailed technique that requires design and placement for each individual piece of leather to ensure the best presentation of the print on the product.
“Anni’s work strikes the perfect balance between art and wearability, which is something that we strive to do,” says Liam, our Creative Director. “The collaboration with the Foundation was an incredible opportunity to look through her archives, and appreciate first-hand how inspirationally innovative her techniques and colours were.”
The Mr Cinch Mini is a stand-out for Liam from the collection, a new shape for Deadly Ponies presented in the ‘Meander’ print and available in a range of new season colours. Using natural palettes intrinsic to Anni’s work, this collaboration inspired the rest of the Deadly Ponies’ winter selection – particularly the deep natural tones of Garnet (our first true red leather), supported by neutral hues Basalt and Forest.
Each piece in the collection harnesses Deadly Ponies’ innovative and timeless design with the enduring popularity of Anni Albers, telling a story that merges fashion and art. Complete with a limited edition numbered card, these exclusive pieces are essential collector’s items for appreciators of both the arts and Deadly Ponies.
