We exclusively use ethically-sourced leathers, and are currently in the process of implementing renewable energy to our new atelier. We have embarked upon a mission for our company to be plastic-free, and as a result, zero waste by 2022. In addition to this, we are working towards B-Corp certification, and a more circular product.
This is a big part of why we have opened our own factory - operated entirely by us as an extension of Deadly Ponies. This provides us with complete control over quality, and environmental and social impacts - including our care for our people. Our atelier will eventually run on renewable energy with zero waste to landfill, enabling us to reach B-Corp certification by 2022.
While we design, sample and quality check all of our products in our Auckland office, we no longer produce in New Zealand. Earlier this year, we were proud to open our own atelier in the mountainous region of Chiang Mai, Thailand. This has been a dream of ours for a long time, and to see it come to fruition has been incredible. With the closure of New Zealand Light Leathers (a key leather supplier), and a dwindling interest in leather craft, we needed to make the move offshore. For us, this simply could not mean compromising on our ethical ethos, so the only way forward was to open our own atelier. We have trained 30+ artisans in the intricate art of french leather craft, and own and operate the beautiful atelier ourselves. By 2022, we intend to produce 100% of our product there, running entirely off renewable energy with zero waste to landfill, enabling us to acquire B-Corp certification.
Yes. We still source our premium NZ Deer skin from New Zealand under an exclusive agreement. This is a premium product that we are renowned for. For more information on our materials, explore our Materials Index here.
We have recently launched our exclusive Cactus capsule, our most-loved classics reimagined in a vegan leather alternative, crafted from innovative cactus. This has been an incredibly in depth process to find the perfect alternative that doesn't cost the earth. With a lot of 'vegan alternatives', the manufacturing process can be more resource heavy and environmentally damaging, with high water use and chemical processing - and the majority not biodegradable.
Our leathers are sourced from across the world, with the majority from Italy, France, North America and New Zealand. We work closely with the Leather Working Group to ensure ethical and sustainable sourcing, and with Gold Standard suppliers or equivalent.
We exclusively use ethically-sourced and sustainable leathers for their premium quality, longevity and circularity. Our bags are designed to surpass trends and stand the test of time when properly cared for, ultimately producing less waste to landfill, and having less long term impact on the environment. We understand that for some people, as an animal by-product, leather isn't an option, which is why we’ve launched our Cactus capsule, a vegan leather alternative in some of our most-loved styles.
