Deadly Ponies is proud to continue its partnership with Forest & Bird through Mr Hoiho, a limited-edition bag dedicated to the conservation of Aotearoa New Zealand’s hoiho yellow-eyed penguin.
Following last year’s Mr Kororā, which celebrated the world’s smallest penguin,
our attention turns to one of the rarest.
Drawing on the hoiho’s distinctive colouring, Mr Hoiho is handcrafted from past-season leather offcuts in keeping with our zero-waste ethos. 25% of proceeds from each bag will be donated directly to Forest & Bird
to support vital conservation efforts.
Found only in Aotearoa New Zealand, fewer than 5,000 hoiho remain. Despite their secretive nature, they are known for a shrill, attention-grabbing call that gives them their te reo Māori name, meaning “noise shouter.”
Their future is increasingly uncertain. Food shortages, disease, habitat loss and predation on land and at sea contribute to poor breeding seasons and declining populations. Being caught in commercial fishing nets is another significant threat to their survival.
Without action, scientists predict that hoiho could become extinct on mainland Aotearoa New Zealand within 10–20 years. The populations on mainland New Zealand, Auckland and Campbell Island represent three genetically distinct subspecies. Once lost here, they are gone forever.
Forest & Bird is working to secure their future through stronger marine protections and hands-on conservation in the Catlins at Irihuka Long Point and Te Rere Reserve, home to some of the last remaining mainland populations.
Crafted from past-season leather offcuts,
Mr Hoiho reflects our zero-waste ethos and commitment to working exclusively with fully traceable, Leather Working Group certified hides.
Mr Hoiho brings attention to a species at risk of disappearing from our shores. Through this collaboration, every bag sold contributes to Forest & Bird’s work to protect hoiho and other seabirds across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Mr Hoiho is available exclusively at deadlyponies.com and in Deadly Ponies stores.
